Component 1 Evalaution
Evaluation
For Component 1, the projects we explored were 'Face Value' and 'Constructed Landscapes'.
Face Value:
I wasn't particularly confident at the start of this project, with the focus around face I was undoubtedly wanting to tr other ways to complete this project without showing too much of my face. However, as we progressed through this phase, I felt restricted in what I could do but artists such as Nico Froelich, Tyler Mitchell and the Rankin Project had all made me considered what type of approach I would like to take towards making a unique selection of images. These artists experimented with unique techniques to enhance the lighting, composition and overall artistic style of their photographs, further amplifying my understanding of what it takes to craft a personally-stylistic collection of images. It was at this point that I realised that I had potential in what I could produce, and so I began to make series of self-portraits. I have explored a range of media, processes and techniques in this project including digital editing, manipulation of light and cyanotypes.
Throughout my Face Value project, I explored a variety of different types of materials such as cyanotypes, dark room development and image colouring. I thoroughly enjoyed image colouring, as it involved sabotaging the image and then applying different colours to the image. I had played with and refined the structure of these images and wanted to pursue a more meaningful purpose behind these images. Blue and red represented the conflicting emotions I had felt at the time of this unit, with blue symbolising my despondent attitude towards photography and red portraying the ever-growing desire to achieve good content within my course. Deanna Lawson inspired me to pursue a specific type of portraiture in my final images, with my identity being obscured.
Constructed Landscapes:
This project was the time my experience in photography changed; I flourished like a peacock with my confidence slowly beginning to shine through. This unit helped me understand what I enjoyed the most with photography, nature. I began this unit by researching a variety of artists and photographers whose work expressed the theme of Constructed Landscapes, with notable artists such as Uta Barth, Dafna Talmor and Dionne Lee. I played with a range of different methods to try and enhance the quality of my pictures, such as using blur, sophisticated composition and lighting bias.
Through the constant refining of my work, I had managed to revise a consistent level of quality in my pictures. It was at this point that I had really started to enjoy Photography and wanted to do more than ever before. Throughout this project my work developed in a number of ways. For example, I was really impressed with the quality of my blurred landscape images, inspired by the work of Uta Barth, as it represented the complexities found in nature, and so decided to further develop the idea and incorporate slides into the making process of these photographs.
I am pleased with my final piece because it represents how I feel about the theme of Constructed Landscapes, the abstract form and realistic aspect is what divides the creativity from rationality. My final piece conveys the never-ending development of the environment regardless of whether something gets hidden or exposed over time. I have chosen to display them in a particular way because it shows the compact structure of how the world is terraformed. My photographs represents my personality as it shows the unique style of how I present my work as well as how I would like people to perceive me as. Therefore, I hope that viewers of my work can see and the appreciate the character growth I have had personally and can also praise my work to be of sufficient standards.
Overall I think my work has improved through the countless refinements I have made during these projects, if I could improve one thing I would ensure that my work effort had remained consistent throughout Face Value, but my photography has shown its true colours in Constructed Landscapes.
